Day 18: What I Liked When I Was Thirteen

1. Dancing in front of my sliding glass door at night, so I could admire my moves in the reflection.

2. Richard Simmons. He was so kind, and had such good advice.

3. Making out in the back row of movie theaters--that was as private as it was gonna get.

4. Bubble Yum, Nibs and candy in general.

5. Spaghetti night.

6. Wearing my hair in a ponytail on the side of my head.

7. Harlequin Romances--I read one every day on the bus.

8. Trying on lipstick at JCPenney.

9. Talking on the phone for two or three hours at a stretch--especially when my parents were out.

10. Writing really long notes and passing them behind teachers' backs.

11. My Hello Kitty diary--I called her "Melody." (I just liked that name.)

12. Trying to figure out if boys liked me through incredibly detailed analyses with friends.

Hi Sam!

Your 13 sounds an awful lot like my 13. Although my hair was so thin and fine that I had to use a banana clip to get my side ponytail to stay! One time I was riding in the car while my mom was driving and I dropped an entire bag of Nibs on the car seat and floor. I yelled "NIB-ALANCHE!!!" My mom and I laughed so hard I nearly peed my pants. Apparently it was funny! I still find it difficult to walk past a bag of Nibs. They're so cute and yummy! Did you ever have the Bubble Yum Baby? You put a small pink balloon in her mouth and cranked her arm so it looked like she was blowing a bubble. Super mega cool! She went everywhere with me when we lived on Kentucky Ave. in Atlantic City. Yep, the Kentucky Ave. from Monopoly! I skated everywhere and wore my rainbow colored skate covers. At night I added on my flint sparklers that sparked when I skated on the street. Oh yeah. I was cool.

I'm looking forward to Nia on the
4th! Hi to David and Jarrah!

Love,

Robyn

@Robyn: Oh good, you're back! I've missed you!

I've never heard of that baby. Way cool. And I still love Nibs. And I should have added that I loved my roller skates, too. :)

Yes, the 4th is on the calendar, and to quote my 13-year-old self, I'm stoked. ;)

I would try the side ponytail at home, but was never brave enough to wear it outside. In retrospect, it was probably better that way.

I definitely rocked the Mindy (of Mork and Mindy) mini-ponytails though!

Wow. That was the world I imagined at 13 but couldn't figure out how to access. (I really, really wanted to.) I was a brooding tomboy stuck in rural New England. Bucolic, yes. Cool, absolutely not. I spent my time playing sports and reading Jane Austen novels!

@Sweddy: Oh, I was reading the Jane Austen novels! :) And I wished I liked sports, I really did.
