One of My "What's Up With That?" Posts

I just succumbed to marketing and bought one of those "mineral" (like what kind? sedimentary rock?) foundation thingos. You know, the ones that look like powder, but have a little brush included, and you're supposed to "sweep it over your face in a circular motion" to achieve a "smooth, flawless finish?"

They also claim that the foundation is "good for your skin." In the same way that being buried under thousands of years of rock strata is "good for" fossils? Because it helps to preserve you? Because I think that's what my face looks like. A big fossil.

I followed the directions. I swept, I swirled. But my face looks like a recently uncovered archaeological dig--all the fault lines, crags and crevices are still plainly visible, but I'm coated in a thick film of sabulous earth so that I resemble an unlabeled specimen of indeterminate origin.

So I ask you...what's up with the hype? Is it because they provide sunscreen? In the same way that covering myself in river clay and sporting it all day would provide sunscreen? Is it because they're advertised by Jessica Alba, whose skin looks like a freshly poured latte? Or is this just another way for the beauty industry to make a buck off of me?

Don't answer that. Grrr.

Ha! I just bought into the hype myself. I purchased mine from a friend that sells Mary Kay so mine has yet to be delivered. I'll let you know what I think when I get mine.

I've been thinking about that stuff and wondering if it was legit. I asked my (makeup artist) sister once, and she told me the lowdown, but, having a brain like a sieve, I have forgotten, so the ads are having more sway over me than her wisdom.

Right now, I'm sad because my wee, tiny Stila 40 Watt powder foundation sample just ran out, and darn if I'm spending $28 to buy the real product.

Love your descriptions!

Personally, I love the coverage, but hate the powdery dryness in the undereye area where I have extremely thin skin. (The tip I got from the Bare Essentials girl is to use very little and then to really work it into the brush in circular motions in the cap, generating warmth even, before it ever hits your face.)

Why, oh why is this even on your radar? You have flawless skin au natural!

Why are you messing with perfection I ask?

Thanks for being our product tester! I kept seeing those ads and wondering, why exactly are "minerals" what I want covering my skin? I think I'll stick to my good ol' pressed powder compact for now.... :) when I can remember to put that on! :) Lix

Hehe...I had to chime in. (I came here through Mamasphere's blogroll. The "dragonfruit" caught my eye - my hubs is Chinese, I'm...not. So our daughter is a mix. :-))

I bought the Bare Minerals last year...and I love it. I don't have a lot of lines to hide...but it does a fair job of camoflaging (sp??!) all the splotches, black circles under my eyes, etc. That, and it's the only makeup I've tried in 15 years that DOESN'T make me break out. :-)

Sorry you don't love yours!

yeah, why does powdering your face with rock dust sound like such a great idea?

Every time I see those commercials I imagine Mount Rushmore. Stone faces.
